Joao Barros

In a career spanning more than 25 years, João Barros co-invented, productized and commercialised new AI-based technologies, platforms and products for the networking, automotive and mobility industries. He held academic appointments at MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM), and Universidade do Porto, where he served as Full Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Strategy Director of Porto Business School. As a tech entrepreneur, João founded two venture-backed startups, Streambolico and Veniam, where he served as CEO until the acquisition by AI vision leader Nexar in 2022. Following his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from TUM, João Barros’ work has led to one book, 180 science and technology papers, 22 International patents, and feature articles by NPR, BBC, MIT Technology Review, The Atlantic, and TechCrunch, among others. His works count more than 12,000 citations by other authors. Prof. Barros is an IEEE Fellow, was awarded two Fulbright scholarships, and has received numerous awards from IEEE, CableLabs, Wireless broadband alliance, TU Automotive, and a state-wide best teaching award by the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Arts. He holds a performing arts degree in flute from the Music Conservatory of Porto, Portugal. Dr. Barros is ready to teach in Portuguese, English, German, French, and Spanish.
